Teen Mom 2: Cute Babies and a Whole Lot of Problems

Back when they were 16 and Pregnant, Chelsea Houska, Jenelle Evans, Kailyn Lowry and Leah Messer had to deal with bulging bellies, bad boyfriends, disappointed parents and college dreams going up in smoke. And now? They've got adorable babies, yes -- but also lots more problems.

The first season of MTV's Teen Mom, a riveting, real-life cautionary tale about the trials that accompany that title, became a ratings bonanza (averaging 3.4 million viewers per week). Teen Mom 2 (Tuesday, 10 p.m. ET) will no doubt draw millions, too. And so, like the Teen Mom girls before them, Chelsea, Jenelle, Kailyn and Leah now shoulder the blessing/curse of real-life, magazine-cover, paparazzi-trailing fame. As if having a child while you still are one isn't tumultuous enough!

At least these girls are paid a salary. The number that's floating around is in the range of $60,000–$65,000 per season. It's not much compared to some reality stars. (Kim Kardashian reportedly makes $40,000 an episode.) But for a teen girl who's living rent-free with her parents (or her boyfriend's parents), it's a sizable amount.

On the other hand, is the media scrutiny that accompanies the job really worth it? Season 1's Amber Portwood, whose domestic violence troubles have occasionally dominated the gossip rags, might not think so. Currently, it's Season 1's Farrah Abraham who's hogging the tabloid headlines -- with commentators taking jabs at her decision (albeit ill-advised) to get breast implants. This can't be healthy for a young woman who obviously cares a lot about what people think of her.

Based on the trailer for Season 2, it looks like there will be plenty more controversy for the media to chronicle. 

Bubbly blond cheerleader Leah and her ex-boyfriend, Corey Simms, had twins. When one of the babies has a medical issue, a despairing Leah reaches out to Corey. The two reconcile, and eventually they let MTV's cameras film their emotional wedding ceremony.

The serious-minded Kailyn had to move in with her boyfriend Jo Rivera's family when she got pregnant. Ever since, she's been raising their son, going to community college and juggling two part-time jobs. Then she and Jo break up, and she has to move to the basement of the house. Somehow in the midst of all this she meets someone new.

Sporty, popular Chelsea had to drop out of high school when she got pregnant. But now that her baby daughter is here, Chelsea's working on her high school diploma online. Her main drama appears to be her still-rocky relationship with boyfriend Adam Lind. Her friends and family would prefer him out of her life, but for Chelsea, it's more complicated.

Pot-headed party girl Jenelle is living at home and leaning heavily on her mom to care for her son. But her mother doesn't tolerate her irresponsible behavior, and sues a very angry Jenelle for custody of the baby. And the drama continues. Jenelle was recently arrested for drug possession. So it's already clear that at least one of these girls wasn't ready for her TV close-up. Let's hope the others fare a little better.
