Lady Gaga may have expected more from Target.
The songstress had signed a deal with the discount retailer for it to release an exclusive edition of her second studio album, Born this Way, set to debut on May 23. But now the pop star has reportedly pulled out of the deal, according to E! Online.
Gaga was said to be off-put by Target's policies on political donations and their impact on issues important to gays and lesbians. "She and Target didn't see eye to eye on Target's policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community," a source told gay magazine The Advocate.
Target has been under fire by LGBT activists since the revelation that it had donated $150,000 in corporate funds to MN Forward, a political action committee that supported anti-gay candidate Tom Emmer in his unsuccessful 2010 bid for governor of Minnesota, according to the magazine.
Music magazine Billboard reports that Gaga initially had been uncomfortable with the proposed deal with Target, but she decided on some ground rules before going ahead with it. "Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past," the magazine quotes her as saying. "Our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those groups."
E! Online says that Target, whose slogan is "Expect More. Pay Less," could not promise that it would never donate to a political candidate or group believed to be anti-gay.
