The Annual Friends of Artists Space Dinner in Honor of Yvonne Rainer
Friday May 6, 2011
The Board, the team and the Friends of Artists Space announce with great pride that the Annual Friends of Artists Space Dinner 2011 will be hosted in honor of legendary dancer, choreographer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer!
As co-founder of the Judson Dance Theater in the early 1960s, Rainer is central to a generation of artists who renegotiated both the conceptual terms of art, and the contexts and manner in which art was shown and engaged with. Her works from this period, such as Trio A (1966) and Continuous Project Altered Daily (1969), exist as key moments in the development of Minimalism and the breaking of traditional codes within dance. In the 1970s, Rainer's work moved from choreography to the production of feature-length films. Across seven films produced between 1975 and 1996, Rainer has addressed social concerns in a manner that integrates personal experience with historical events, exercising a particular feminist approach.
"The rigor and grace of Rainer's inquiry enact a habit of mind that insists that clear thinking is imperative, that beauty is possible, and that love, if always late, messy, and imperfect, must nonetheless compel our surrender and our conviction." Peggy Phelan
The Annual Friends of Artists Space Dinner in honor of Yvonne Rainer will be held on the 6th of May, 2011, 7:30pm. The laudation will be given by Gregg Bordowitz, artist, writer, member of the activist group Act Up, and Professor of Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Food will be prepared by St. John Restaurant and Arnold & Henderson, London; wine courtesy Châteaux La Coste, Aix en Provence.
